How the estimate works

No black box — here's the honest math.

Where does the number come from?

Price ≈ setup fee + (material volume × rate per cm³), with quantity discounts (10% off at 3+, 20% at 10+, 30% at 50+). Rates are ballparks drawn from typical US service-bureau retail pricing. I show a range, not a single number, because real quotes genuinely vary that much.

How accurate is it?

Good enough to answer "is this a $30 part or a $300 part?" — which is what most people actually need. It can't see thin walls, impossible overhangs, or mirror finishes, so treat it as a starting point and get exact quotes from bureaus on the Request Board.

Do you keep my STL file?

No. The file is parsed by JavaScript running in your browser tab. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or transmitted — you can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and it still works.

What about CNC machining?

This estimator covers 3D printing only. CNC pricing depends on machine time, tooling, and fixturing in ways a simple calculator can't fairly capture — for machined parts, post your STEP file on the Request Board and let shops quote it.
