View profile →How to choose a robotics & drone 3D printing service
Drones and robots punish every extra gram and every sloppy tolerance. A shop that's great at display models may not be set up for parts that fly or move. Here's what to check:
1. Weight is the spec that matters
Every gram costs flight time on a drone and payload on a robot arm. Ask whether the shop designs for lightweighting — topology optimization, hollow sections, smart infill — instead of just printing your file as-is.
2. Materials for motion, impact, and weather
- Nylon 12 (SLS / MJF) — tough and ductile; the workhorse for drone frames and robot brackets.
- TPU — vibration dampening, bumpers, and grippers that need to flex.
- Carbon-fiber composites — stiff, light arms and structural parts.
- Outdoor exposure — worth asking about UV and heat resistance if the part lives outside; some materials degrade in sun.
3. Tolerances for moving parts
Motor mounts, bearing bores, and gear interfaces need to fit the first time. Ask what tolerances the shop routinely holds on your process and material, and whether they check critical dimensions before shipping.
4. From one prototype to a fleet
One good frame is a prototype; fifty identical frames is a product. Ask about repeatability across builds and whether they can document the process for production runs.
